May is Trauma Awareness Month

May is Trauma Awareness Month – presented by the American Trauma Society (ATS). ATS is dedicated to the elimination of needless death and disability from injury. Created in 1996, ATS was called upon to educate the public about trauma and injury prevention and the need for trauma and emergency systems, to ensure optimal care of traumatic injuries. In 1988, ATS was instrumental in having May of each year designated as National Trauma Awareness Month (NTAM) by President Ronald Reagan and Congress. Since then, ATS has worked with other trauma organizations to develop injury prevention and trauma awareness materials.

This May 2022, the ATS and the Society of Trauma Nurses (STN) have worked together to create this year’s campaign – “Safe Surroundings: Preventing Violence and Promoting Peace Community by Community.” This theme is timely and appropriate as injury prevention specialists throughout the nation have been responding to the rise in intentional injuries and deaths. There are four (4) areas of focus this year:

  • Intimate Partner Violence
  • Firearm Injury Prevention
  • Mental Health Awareness
  • Community Violence Intervention

This year, ATS is hosting a series of webinars throughout the month. Click here to sign up.
