Congratulations to the Carroll County Fire Department, Manchester Volunteer Fire Department & Maryland State Police Trooper 3!
These EMS Clinicians were awarded the Maryland TraumaNet’s 2025 EMS Clinicians of the Year Award during the Maryland Committee on Trauma’s Annual Point Counterpoint Conference.
In December 2025, Carroll County EMS responded to a motorcycle crash involving a critically injured teenage male. Crews found the patient with severe, life-threatening multi-system trauma and a rapidly failing airway. When the patient became hypoxic, bradycardic, and hypotensive, Lieutenant Paramedic Joshua Myers performed a successful surgical cricothyrotomy, stabilizing the airway. The patient was flown by Maryland State Police Trooper 3 toward R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center, where he suffered a cardiac arrest shortly after takeoff but was resuscitated with CPR and whole blood transfusion. He was transported to Shock Trauma, underwent multiple lifesaving surgeries, and ultimately survived to hospital discharge, returning home in time for Christmas—highlighting the effectiveness and coordination of Maryland’s EMS and trauma system.
Congratulations!
