How much is too much?

It is Jane’s birthday her family and friends want to celebrate. They all meet at a local bar and now someone is yelling shots, shots, shots!!!

Did you know that gender has an effect on your drinking risk? Low risk drinking for men is no more than 4 drinks on any given day and no more than 14 drinks per week.  Low risk drinking for women is no more than 3 drinks on any given day and no more than 7 drinks per week.  National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) research shows that only about 2 in 100 people who drink within these limits have alcohol use disorder.

What is a standard drink?

750 ml (a regular wine bottle)=5 A shot (1.5oz glass/50ml bottle)=1

a mixed drink or cocktail=1 or more

200ml (a “half pint”)=4.5

375ml (a “pint or half bottle”)=8.5

750ml (a “fifth”)=17


Drink responsibly.  Make sure you have a sober designated driver when out drinking. Avoid alcohol completely if you: Plan to drive a vehicle or operate machinery, take medications that interact with alcohol, have a medical condition that alcohol can aggravate, are pregnant or trying to become pregnant.
