Frequently Asked Questions

trauma versus emergency roomWhat is Trauma?

Trauma is defined as any serious injury resulting from an accident or violence that involves a physical force on the body. The most common mechanisms of injury seen in Maryland resulting in serious injuries are falls, motor vehicle crashes, and penetrating injuries from gunshots or stabbings. Trauma is the leading cause of death for individuals up to the age of 45, and the fourth leading cause of death overall for all ages.

What is TraumaNet?

TraumaNet is a multidisciplinary organizational advocacy group consisting of the Maryland State Trauma centers and Specialty Referral Centers, along with state organizations that support our trauma system.  The group focuses on issues related to clinical care, research, education, injury prevention and healthcare, while promoting a collaborative statewide approach for all aspects of trauma care delivery.

How do Trauma Centers differ from Other Emergency Departments?

In addition to meeting Emergency Department standards, Trauma Centers in Maryland are designated by the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services Systems and regulated by the Code of Maryland Regulation.  Trauma Centers have specialized equipment, physicians, nurses, therapists, and other staff trained in trauma care to treat severely injured patients according to current trauma standards from the time they arrive at the hospital through rehabilitation or discharge to home and beyond. Trauma Centers also collect and analyze data in order to recognize and react to trends in trauma care through education, injury prevention and legislative action.
